First to the Moon by Barbara Hehner

The boys thought this one was a bit slow at times. I think they would rather have had the information presented without the perspective of Buzz Aldrin’s daughter. I thoroughly enjoyed it though.

This book covers the first manned mission to the moon and what it was like to be here on earth watching the mission unfold on TV.

Story of the World Volume 1

The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child: Volume 1: Ancient Times: From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor, Revised Edition

We thoroughly enjoyed the Story of the World. We used the activity guide with it and found it to be indispensable. My boys both liked hearing the stories every day and always looked forward to the books we would read along with our lesson. Unfortunately, we hardly ever did any of the crafts/activities due to my first pregnancy and having an infant for the first time. We did a few simple ones throughout the book but definitely didn't take advantage of that aspect of the activity guide.

In the next book we will be taking more time to do the timeline (which fell by the wayside this year), activities and crafts, and to do a bit more drill on names and dates. At times I have been very impressed by my boys' retention of the information we covered in the book... at other times I've wondered what planet they're on right now. I think that's just part of having kids though :)
